The main day job

November 22, 2007

Although like anything else there are bad days, my agency nursing and care work has been pretty good over the last few months. There have been a few new semi-regular places, and these have often been slightly better paid too. Generally speaking, most N.H.S. hospital and learning disabilities work pays around £7.00, whereas mental health support work, challenging behaviour, children’s homes and non-N.H.S. learning disabilities pays around £8.50 per hour. I tend to get a mix of the two rates, but quite often more of the latter.

Since I had my two letters to The Independent newspaper published early this year, one of them a lengthy direct reply to Health Secretary at the time Patricia Hewitt, there is no doubt that there have been improvements in the N.H.S. environments where I work. This is obviously directly a result of my letters ha ha! Back then, some of the situations could hardly have got any worse. As was the case nationally, the cost-cutting, bureaucracy and never-ending government changes were destroying a couple of wards in particular. One of them has since been given a substantial budget for employment of a higher ratio of staff nurses to health care assistants, very good for the ward, the atmosphere and quality of care has improved as a result.

The psychiatric hospital has definitely improved in terms of offering therapeutic groups and activities, where a few years ago there wasn’t much more than a (very good) art therapist on offer. Of course many patients are in no state to attend the various groups, but that is another story. Some patients do take part in activities, and you can see it makes a difference. Now all we need is for the whole of society to seriously acknowledge the increasing mental health problems we have, and how the underlying values of our alienated and materialistic lifestyle are largely responsible. Just my opinion of course, ahem.

Doing the odd bits of television and film extra work have undoubtedly helped me cope better with the stresses and strains of the care work, as has being occupied with finishing my album (and doing a few gigs) for most of this year. I expect I will be doing it for a while longer yet. However tedious and badly paid it sometimes is, it mostly works for me.

Fonejacker

November 20, 2007

This is the funniest comedy I have seen in a long time! For anyone who hasn’t seen any of this yet, go to YouTube and have a look at the top 4 or 5 clips that come up for the search “Fonejacker”. They are all about 2 or 3 minutes long. I have seen one or two of these 20 times or more, and they still make me laugh!!!

The new album “Vision On”

November 6, 2007

Been a while since I’ve written here, not that life has been quiet, exactly the opposite.

The main focus is now the new album “Vision On” which I am very pleased with. We are putting the artwork together this week, and on Friday I go in with Julian T. for a few final final changes to a few of the mixes. Then it’s off to the manufacturers at the beginning of next week. I have been aiming for a November release but life has been getting in the way. Realistically it looks more like early December now.

The album is mostly a return to my “progressive rock” roots. It rocks quite a bit more than my last album, the songs are stronger and longer, there’s 10 tracks and the album lasts just over 50 minutes. As usual, one or two originally strong tracks didn’t work out in the end, while one or two others presented themselves as better alternatives at a relatively late stage.

There are two songs from my old 1980s band Burnessence days. One was never recorded, another from my 1984 album has been re-worked. There is a Steve Hillage and Gong tribute where I get to do some guitar in the style of my seventies hero, and also, if you listen carefully at the end, a brief impersonation of Daevid Allen! Most of the other songs and instrumentals are completely new, featuring various guest musicians.

Lyrically? Well as usual with me, there’s a general theme of awareness, but this time I have been a bit more specific in places, particularly with “Here Comes The Great Collapse”. The general vocal performance and production is an improvement on the last album.

Let’s hope a few people like it.
